I walk the three miles home from work.
At mile one, a dog
rediscovers his love of life
on tired legs.
Just rescued yesterday
and now in his late years
learning the sounds of kindness.
At mile two, a coyote
has been reduced
to a discarded snout.
I think how he is
unable now
to smell his own rot.
At mile three, I make it home.
I am two lives older.
